46- How to conquer your fear of public speaking
According to various sources, it is estimated that between 70% to 75% of people have a fear of public speaking!
This common fear can cause a list of physical reactions— sweaty hands, nightmares, increased heartbeat, nausea and more, can occur from the mere thought of speaking in public, even if the event is months away.
What I have seen in my practice is varying degrees of fear depending on the situation. For example, some people are comfortable speaking in front of their peers even about subjects about which they are matter experts, while others are terrified at the thought. Some may feel comfortable talking about themselves, but terrified when asked to discuss a specific topic.
For most people, these fears were first formed during their school years when they had to make presentations in front of their classmates — some may have been ridiculed or unable to answer the questions posed by their teachers and this uncomfortable situation evolved over time into a fully developed fear. Others may have grown up in a very demanding home or school environment where the bar for their success was set very high and they felt the constant anxiety of not reaching their potential.
One method that is very effective in confronting our fear of public speaking is to tell yourself that the people who are listening to you, appreciate you and are interested in what you have to say. They are there because they like you and respect what you have to say!
This may seem very simple and obvious. However, in all the sessions I have had with dealing with clients who fear public speaking, I have found that incorporating this simple belief makes a world of difference.
