Sir Ferdinando Gorges

Pioneering colonist Ferdinando Gorges (1565-1647) was a British naval, military commander, was a key figure and major promoter of the English colonization of New England, and investor in the Popham Colony. His early involvement in English trade with and settlement of North America as well as his efforts in founding the Province of Maine earned him the title of the \"Father of English Colonization in North America,\" even though he never set foot in the New World.
