The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is observed annually on August 9, celebrating indigenous cultures, achievements, and rights worldwide. The indigenous Aztec people still exist today. While the Aztec Empire fell to the Spanish in 1521, the actual ethnic groups—primarily known as the Nahua—survived. Today, over 1.5 million people in Mexico speak Nahuatl (the language of the Aztecs), and millions more are of direct Aztec descent. Náhuatl is still the most widely spoken Indigenous language family in Mexico.
