Born in Tuscany, in central Italy, St. Catherine of Siena was an Italian mystic, pious laywoman (Dominican Tertiary), and diplomat who engaged in papal politics through extensive letter-writing and advocacy. She is revered as a Doctor of the Church due to her extensive theological authorship, which also greatly influenced early Italian vernacular literature.
