The original namesake of the current Pope was Saint Leo, also known as Pope Leo the First (391-461AD), a Roman aristocrat who served as Bishop of Rome from the year 440AD until his death. He is best known for having met Attila the Hun in 452 and persuading him to turn back from his invasion of Italy.
